From Visibility to Visualisation: English–Polish Terminology and Resemiotisation in EU Policy Infographics

The study distinguishes institutional visibility from visualisation and investigates how that distinction operates across English and Polish EU policy infographics. It aligns 12 English Council of the EU infographic pages with their Polish counterparts and examines communicative purpose, terminology, reformulation, visual organisation and translation shifts.

The result is an auditable workflow for treating EU infographics not simply as attractive illustrations, but as research and teaching objects whose linguistic, numerical and visual integrity can be checked.

KEY FINDINGS

Availability is not the same as access

The research shows that a Polish-language URL may reproduce the appearance of multilingual access while still containing linguistic, numerical or policy-status problems.

01 · VISUAL STABILITY

Macrostructure was largely retained

Eleven Polish pages preserved the English visual macrostructure and most salient numerical relations.

02 · ACCESS GAP

One endpoint remained untranslated

A nominally Polish-language endpoint contained English content, showing that visibility alone does not ensure equivalent access.

03 · QUALITY CONTROL

Three translated pages contained inconsistencies

Date, century or policy-status inconsistencies demonstrate why bilingual visualisation requires auditable quality review.

CONTRIBUTION TO VISUAL-EU

From published infographic to verified learning object

The article gives the project a reproducible method for selecting, checking and teaching with multilingual EU visual materials.

  • Separates institutional visibility from the quality of visualisation
  • Connects terminology, translation and multimodal page design
  • Identifies practical checks for dates, numbers, policy status and untranslated content
  • Supports evidence-informed use of EU infographics in higher education
